History The Colt R6601 otherwise known as the Sporter Match HBAR was added to Colt’s catalog in 1991 there is no list date of when Colt stopped producing it. It features many of the iconic features that would appear on Colt’s M16 rifles (handguard, stock, carry handle etc…) and was purpose built for the U.S. commercial market. These rifles would use a 20” barrel like the M16 but use an HBAR or heavy barrel profile. The lowers would originally ship with the old SP1 style lower (no fence screw front pin). Later 6601’s would utilize A2 type lowers, which is when Colt would finally get rid of the front screw and go back to standard takedown pins for the consumer market, however the fire control pins would go from standard size to oversize and would feature a sear block inside the lower (beginning of the AWB era, some would also not have threaded barrels during this time) Condition The Colt rifle pictured is the item for sale. This is an original Colt R6601 “Sporter Match HBAR) chambered in .223/5.56. We are listing this as a used firearm as we do not know its exact history. However this rifle is in fantastic shape and has many signs of being unfired. The case deflector does not have any scuffing or brass marks which indicate either a very low round count or none all together. The rifle also has tons of what appears to be old school packing grease. The inner parts were coated in this and so was the gas block. The rifle has its original box (no manual) and one aluminum grey 30-RD Magazine. The mag may need to be removed or restricted if you live in a restricted area. The barrel looked great clean with a nice shiny bore and good sharp rifling. The bolt and action felt nice and smooth with a clean bolt face. There is some surface wear likely from this rifles transportation and handling but overall this rifle is in fantastic shape. The lower is the original pre-AWB era lower SP1 style with the front screw and standard pins. The polymer furniture is in great shape with no issues to report, this rifle features the iconic triangle hand guard.
